What Was Your Favourite Book When You Were A Child?

What was the best book you loved to read when you were younger?
This is our first discussion starter - not just for the children, but for
everyone at Myross Bush - and further afield if you are reading
this from somewhere else!
I loved all the Enid Blyton books but I also had a soft spot for the classics
like Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, etc, and then there was always
Dr Seuss!!
What about those series you loved to collect - the Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys and
Trixie Belden books....
Please add your discussion as a comment and we'll see where our love of Literature
takes us.

  1. Hi guys. Now this is taxing my brain because I can hardly remember that far back! So I will have to keep thinking about the favourite book but I DID have a favourite weekly and 'Annual' called the "Diana" which I used to bike from Waikiwi into Gladstone every Monday to get. It was exciting to watch the shop keeper go to my very own wooden magazine slot with name on it and get the comic for me. It cost about sixpence.

  2. Ben is really enjoying Roald Dahl at the moment. We have just finished Danny, Champion of the World and we've started James and the Giant Peach. Adam really enjoyed reading Aussie Nibbles when he was younger. I loved reading the children The Wishing Chair books when they were younger, but I'm struggling to remember what I enjoyed as a young girl ...

  3. The Lovelock boys were avid readers of 'The Hardy Boys' and the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis! I used to really enjoy the original little books about Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends that were written by Rev. W. Awdry and then by his son Christopher. Tom Clancy then became a favourite but lately a relaxing read (ie something not to do with work!) is the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child - he is too cool!

  4. As a youngster I didn't like reading, but then mum got me into comic books, anything to get me reading.I'm old enough to remember Archie, Veronica & Jughead, or Ritchie Rich, and of course Donald Duck. I think I read every Nancy Drew book written by the time I was 10. Sorry couldn't ever get into Roald Dahl. Prefer a Mystery, and shock horror even Mills & Boon (easy to pick up and put down or finish in a day- lol).

  5. I had forgotten about the Archie comics and books! I loved those too.
I must admit - there's nothing like a good mystery. Still love them!

  6. I loved Charlotte's Web. I identified with the character Fern as she nursed the runt of the litter as that was the time I was hugely into nursing my dolls and couldn't leave any out of my bed at night. I got caught up in the emotion of Charlotte dying and loved the animals coming to life with their distinct personalities.

  7. Mine was Winnie the Pooh by AA MIlne!
My Mum read it to me as a small child at primary school. I loved that Christopher Robin was so kind to Pooh and let him have all his adventures! The wee songs that Pooh used to sing such as "buzz, buzz, buzz, a bear loves honey, I wonder why he does?" and how he floats up into the sky with a blue balloon pretending to be a cloud to trick the bees into getting some honey! Great vocabulary, great visual imagery and characterisation.

  8. My favourite books to read when I was at primary school were the Dr Suess books especially Fox in Socks. I loved the hard tongue twisters as they always made me laugh. I also enjoyed the AA Milne poems from his collection When We Were Young. I read them so often that I can still recite some of them now!!

  9. When I was young I loved reading Enid Blyton's Adventures of the Wishing Chair as well as Famous Five and Secret Seven. I loved reading The Enchanted Wood and Faraway Tree to my class and my own children not so long ago. They seem to be timeless books that continue to entertain children by taking them to imaginative places. I hope you enjoy them too.

  10. My favourite was Anne of Green Gables. My nana would give me the next book each birthday and christmas and I loved them! I think it was the terrible pickles she got herself into, the 'puffed sleeves' and 'kindred spirits' that engaged me. I loved the old language and clothes. I still have the series- maybe I'll go dig them out again!

  11. As a kid I LOVED to read - anything at all but Trixie Beldon, Enid Blyton, comics, cartoons... One of the first books that grabbed me by the throat and didn't let go was 'A Wrinkle in Time' by Madeleine L'Engle - I loved the thought-provoking ideas and fantasy and possibilities... I still LOVE fantasy and science fiction and wish I had many more hours in my day to be able to read as much as I wanted...

  12. As a young girl i was very fascinated with the Tales of the Arabian Nights,
Pippy Longstocking and the Meg Mysteries.
I would spend my Saturday mornings at the old public library searching for and reading The Chronicles of Narnia.
I also enjoy, Julian May (sci-fi), Sara Douglass (fantasy fiction) and Lee Child, although I was disappointed in his latest novel

  13. I loved a book called the Trouble With Terry. I can't remember who the authors was. It was about a girl who was a bit of a tomboy and got into lots of trouble. My favorite bit was when she invited her friends over and played party games in the dark. She filled a bowl up with spaghetti and got them to put their hands in and guess what it was. Everyone thought it was worms.

  32. Liam loves books with animals in them.

Caleb's favourite book has always been "We're Going on a Bear Hunt". Maia is still too young to have a favourite.

When I (Liam Devery's Mum) was younger the rule in our house was that we could get out of doing anything (household jobs, dishes, gardening...) so long as we were reading. So I grew up reading everything and anything. I still remember Dad sitting out in the hall between our bedrooms reading a chapter each night of the Roald Dahl stories. Sunday mornings we would all lie in bed till late listening to the stories on the radio and reading books. I remember Mr Men books were great. I was also in the era when it was OK to read the Noddy series. We had some great wordless books that we made stories up to but I can't remember what they were called.

We now have loads of books at home. It goes in cycles, but Mog the Cat, Dr Seuss, Hairy McClairy and Dirty Berty books are pretty popular in our house. The boys also quite enjoy a bit of Captain Underpants for a laugh.
